It’s probably true to say that, with 30 launches on a February Winter’s day we’ve just about cracked the revised operating procedures on Shawbury’s r’way 18.  A large turn out with 3 new members to introduce to flying and checks for others was going to keep us on our toes.  Great to see Sophie back on the airfield after a long break and we sent her off with Nick for a check flight before she took a couple of solo trips.

Welcome to Reece and to Jo, two of our new Cosford based MEF gliding bursary students.  Their first trips were in the capable hands of or BI Laura.

At about mid-day the dull, overcast conditions eventually burnt off and the single seat jockeys got airborne.  John Luke was first away.

RAF Coningsby’s Jamie, who lives in the Midlands, had decided to join us for the day for a taster session.  Jamie has applied for “Go Solo” funding so we hope that you enjoyed your two trips today with instructor Geoff M and that we see you again.

The Tin Shed (a Platypus B4) made a welcome appearance today on the launch point.. After her triumph in the 2024 Saltby Aero Comps, Laura took two trips to 4,000ft and then delighted us all with her aeros over the airfield that brought the launch point to a stand still.

Here’s a different view of the Tin Shed launching.

Having dropped off Laura, #choochoo – a character from “Thomas The Tank Engine“ comes to mind - popped over to Shrewsbury in WG to find his trains   Clearly, they weren’t on strike today.

Elsewhere Norm took Ian for a check flight, or the other way around, Norm taking care that his foot didn’t slip off the rudder pedals………….🤪

………..and Rob’s well executed 3rd landing on the grass after his 1st launch was slay!🤣🤣🤣

The two Harry’s started where they left off o their last flying day.  Both took a check flight with Will before each than took a solo trip in R35.  It’s fantastic to see the progress of these young folk, with the foundation for their success in the RAF Central Fund MEF Gliding Bursary Scheme. Both have now applied for RAFGSA Go Solo grants to take them to the next level.

With the approaching front we lost the sun and cloud base lowered…….

……although there was time to launch Will in the Tin Shed, whilst one anxious owner rechecked the insurance premiums and another pitched up to check that the rumours were true.

Afterwards, Will said “I’ve never flown a Platypus before, it was a unique experience and the tin can rattle on landing is unbelievable!”

And that was quite enough excitement for one day and we packed up!

Club News:

National Women's Go Gliding Weekend.  The concept is that on Sunday 27 April 2025 (with a fall-back Sunday 1 June), the club will focus on welcoming women, with the aim of helping them to discover gliding and join the club.  We will need normal attendance by members to help on the day.
